Originating in early 1988 and scheduled for publication in 1990, the book was conceived as a ”coffee table” book  featuring the production stills from British Film maker John Earnshaw’s documentary “The Search for Boeing One”. Then a recurring cycle of frustrations began to subvert three contracts signed by the NZ Government in partnership with Earnshaw. By the end of 1992 Earnshaw’s project had become inexorably mired in red tape. Almost from the time it was launched, the original book concept was rapidly becoming  irrelevant.

In 1989 photographer and writer Jon Smyth, who had brought the photo book concept to Earnshaw a year earlier, was beginning to scrutinize events undermining the contracts and Government partnership that had been intended to expedite the completion of Earnshaw’s documentary film. By 1992 evidence  pointed to a venal campaign to commandeer both Earnshaw’s documentary project and a potentially lucrative salvage contract Earnshaw had been awarded in official recognition of his contribution to NZ’s historical records. Other evidence pointed to an agenda of frustration being applied to all attempts to open and investigate sealed off tunnels at the old military base at North Head where the first Boeing was said to have been entombed.

In 1994 the controversy, which had been fulminating exponentially in an environment of poor communication, mismanagement and autocracy that began four years earlier  when The Crown had unilaterally abandoned their contractual obligations and partnership with Earnshaw, finally boiled over into the high court where litigation  usurped history in a legal nightmare that dragged on  interminably until 2003.

Since then Smyth has been sorting and cataloguing two decades of research on what actually happened to the first Boeing and why every search for the relic, beginning with the first in 1959, has been abandoned or terminated leaving more questions than answers...

Based on 20 years of research and drawing a further 10 years of pre-production work by John Earnshaw for his ill fated documentary, The Hijack of Boeing One is the definitive story of the first Boeing and the quest to find its last resting place.
